Tutorial:
Setting Up the POP3 and IMAP4 Services
This page explains how to configure POP3 and IMAP4
and so allow access to your mail through any standard mail client.
For more detailed information on what each option of the 'POP3
/ IMAP4 Settings' dialog performs visit the POP3
and IMAP4 section.
POP3
If you wish to access your mail through a mail client, then your client will almost
certainly support POP3. This is a popular and very efficient protocol which provides
quick and easy access to your mails. Ability Mail Server fully supports the POP3
standard and enabling it is quite easy. The 'POP3 Settings' dialog provides you
with the ability to enable / disable POP3, adjust the port, set the maximum connections
and if required, choose an IP on which to listen on. However, in almost all configurations
the default values will be sufficient.
IMAP4
Many professionals now say that IMAP4 is the best method
of access to your mail, as it provides a more 'advanced' experience.
IMAP4 is designed for access to the same account from multiple
computers and will ensure good synchronization. It has support
for folders, uploading mails and settings mail flags (such
as the read status). This means that 2 users which are logged
into the same account at the same time, should be able to
observe each others actions. The 'IMAP4 Settings' dialog provides
the same functionality as POP3, but with the addition of the
'Do Not Block winmail.dat on Uploads' option. The reason for
this is explained in the next section.
The
'winmail.dat' Problem
Microsoft
Outlook is a well known and very powerful mail client but
does have one minor drawback. In certain versions, uploading
mails into an IMAP4 account can often cause problems. Outlook
usually converts the mail into its own native format, which
is then attached to a text version of the mail. This attachment
usually has the name 'winmail.dat' and if Virus Protection
is enabled, can cause uploads from Outlook to fail occasionally.
If your are using Virus Protection then it is important that
.dat files are always blocked (as these could still potentially
contain viruses). For this reason we created an additional
control just for Outlook users which allows the 'winmail.dat'
attachment on uploads in IMAP4. This means that your users
will still have maximum protection and also have full freedom
with Outlook when using IMAP4.
