Outgoing Mails
The outgoing mail settings dialog allows you to modify the behavior of outgoing mail. Below is a list of what each control means and how you can use it.

  • Max Re-send Attempts - This value represents the maximum number of re-send attempts for any outgoing email. If an outgoing email fails to be delivered after the max amount of re-send attempts, it is deleted and a failure message is sent back to the sender.
  • Re-send Delay - This is the amount of time (in seconds) between re-send attempts.
  • Max Outbound Connections - This value allows you to control the maximum number of simultaneous outgoing mail connections. This value is normally automatically generated by the setup wizard. However, if you wish you can adjust this manually. Please note that rerunning the wizard will overwrite any changes you make to this value.
  • Independent Mode - This allows the server to handle outgoing mail by itself which causes Ability Mail Server to perform the MX Lookups, connect to the designated SMTP servers and deliver the mail directly. This is usually the most preferred mode.
  • Use DNS Host(s) - If you choose independent mode, you have the option of configuring the DNS host(s). A DNS server is used by Ability Mail Server to provide the routing information (MX records) required for any mail crossing the Internet. If you are not sure, or want to allow Ability Mail Server to automatically detect the DNS, do not enable this option. However, if you want to use a specific DNS (or group of DNS's), or if Ability Mail Server is unable to automatically detect the DNS information, this option allows you to provide the DNS information. If required, you can specify more than one DNS by separating each entry with a comma. The entries can be either a host name or IP address.
  • Relay Mode - This forces all outgoing mail to be routed through a specific SMTP server. This SMTP server is usually provided by your ISP or can be another computer on your LAN or the Internet.
  • SMTP Relay Host - If you choose relay mode then you should enter the SMTP server host address or IP here.
  • SMTP Relay Host Port - If you choose relay mode then you should enter the SMTP host's port here. This value is usually 25 which is the SMTP standard, however if the SMTP runs on another port then you can change this value.
  • Clear Queue - If you want to delete all undelivered mails currently in the outgoing mail queue you can hit the 'Clear' button. However, this can only be done when the server is deactivated.
  • Enable More Detailed Logging - If enabled, the outgoing mail logs will record more detail than normal. This is useful in finding the source of setup problems and is usually only required occasionally. Please note that if enabled, this can quickly generate large volumes of log data.
